Street Doves
Gallery exhibition of mixed media works produced during Summer AIR at Phoenix Gallery. Athens, Greece. September 2018.
This exhibition combines my background in ceramics with my interest in historical and modern-day Athens through the study of urban wildlife. During this residency, using walking and psychogeography as methodologies, I explored materiality in Athenian culture as well as the biophilic connection between human and other inhabitants of the city.
With a focus on urban ecology, using found materials as a starting point, I made clay paint inspired by ancient Greek pottery which I applied to materials found on the street. Pigeons — also known as urban doves, or street doves — became my central subject matter as they are a creature that I found represented on ancient pottery but are still common and varied, like humans, on the streets of Athens.
