Ceramic, Exhibition resulting from Ceramics in Expanding Practice Programme AIR Exhibition, LSAD. Limerick, Ireland. 2016.
As selected artist-in-residence (AIR) at Limerick School of Art and Design in 2016, I made a body of work relating again to the concept of biophilia. The aim was to merge traditional fine art sculpture concerns such as form, material, and skill with my previous work exploring the biophilia hypothesis and human connection with nature. The works were produced using experimental mould-making techniques using digital fabrication processes.
These works use geometrical forms — the platonic solids — as starting points for sculptural wildlife shelters. The illusory nature of the form, surface, and space serve to confuse the eye. Just as we have become severely disconnected from the natural world, these forms represent the confusion between the real and reified existence. The works were placed both inside and outside the gallery space to encourage the audience to become active participants beyond the internal space of the gallery.
