Metatron's Cube
Ceramics and Clay Paint on Board, Solo Exhibition at Signal Arts Centre. Wicklow, Ireland. 2019.
This body of work is a continuing investigation into the Biophilia Hypothesis which suggests that we humans have an innate connection to life and all living things. During a residency at the Heinrich Böll Cottage, Achill Island, close examination of living and decaying organic structures in the landscape revealed similar and familiar shapes and patterns in a wide variety of local flora and fauna.
Research during this residency focused on the concepts of sacred geometry. In sacred geometry, Archangel Metatron, the angel of life, oversees the flow of energy in a mystical cube known as Metatron's Cube. This structure contains all the geometric shapes in 'God's' creation and represents the patterns that make up everything 'God' has created.
Through observation and drawing, the organic elements in the landscape were deconstructed and distilled into simple geometric shapes. Hexagons, pentagon’s and circles, along with the platonic solids became impossible to avoid. By using elements of sacred geometry, in tandem with familiar mathematical principles, it became possible to see the underlying structural connections between living elements in the natural environment. This visual and theoretical investigation leads to a firm believe that there is undoubtedly a familiar and universal underlying structure within the natural world that connects us humans to each other and every other living thing.
